The Latin abbreviations can be found after names in old Wills and other documents. The Chapman Codes are three letter abbreviations of the Countries and Counties in the British Isles. They are used extensively in Killick Society data. They have generally been used to show the administrative County at the time at which an event occurred, not the 'historic' County. In may cases the County codes for an area have not changed, even though the geographical area of the County may have changed. To complicate the matter further some Administrative Counties have disappeared as administrative entities, being replaced by a number of 'Unitary' Local Authorities. These changes have not yet been allowed for in the listings below. The 'Chapman' and other codes that may be encountered include the following: ABD AGY ALD ANS ANT ARL ARM AVN AYR BAN BDF BEW BKM BOR BRE BRK BUT CAE CAI CAM CAR CAV CEN CGN CHI CHS CLA CLK CLV CMA CMN CON COR CUL CWD DBY DEN DEV DFD DFS DGY DNB DON DOR DOW DUB DUR GAL GBN GLA GLS GMP GNT GTL GTM GWN GYS LAN LCC LDY LEI LET LEX LIM LIN LKS LND LOG LOU LTN MAY MDX MEA MER MGM MGY MLN MOG MON MOR MSY NAI NBL NFK NIR NRY NTH NTT NYK SAL SAR SCT SEL SFK SGM SHI SLI SOM SRY SSX STI STS SUT SXE SXW SYK WAR WAT WEM WES WEX WGM WIC WIG WIL WIS WLN WLS WMD WOR WRY WSX WYK 'Chapman' Codes for Counties of the British Isles
