Killick – The NameThanks to the efforts of members of the Killick Society over the last three decades our knowledge of the earliest known Killicks has been increased. The oldest British document that has been found refers to a Richard Chelloc who was among a list inhabitants of Lynn (now Kings Lynn) from whom ‘fines’ were due, when Richard paid 3 shillings and 4 pence (3s 4d), probably to retain an interest in land. In 1407 and 1409 land transfers were recorded involving John Killik/Kyllyk at Charlwood, in Surrey. In 1439, the Will of John Kyllyk, a member and trustee of the Company or Guild of Vintners and a citizen of the City of London, referred to the Parish of Bletchingley, in Surrey. In this area less than 50 years later records of a Killick Family start to emerge. At that time the name was often written Kyllyck or Kyllyk. The letters 'i' and 'y' are often interposed in the Tudor and Stuart periods. The Kellock and Killock family names, common in Scotland, particularly in Fife, are not known to be linked to the established English families. Kellick seems to have been particularly in common use in East Anglia, specially in Essex and Suffolk. Spelling variants / mis-spellings found to date include:
