In the 25 years since it's founding the Killick Society has collected a considerable amount of information relating to the Killick name. The majority of the records relate to the Killick Families to be found in England and Wales, but the are also some from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. As a result of two World Wars in the 20th century, both involving conscription for the Armed Forces many men travelled from their homes to the far corners of the earth, some never to return. Records of such deaths and burials, where known, are also held. CIVIL REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS MARRIAGES & DEATHS IN ENGLAND & WALES The requirement to register these came into effect on 1st July 1837, but was not compulsory for over 30 more years, so you may not find the name you want, especially in rural areas in bad weather. The indexes are open to inspection by the public at the Family Records Centre in London, England and at many other locations. The Killick Society has extracted most of the Killick births, marriages and deaths from 1837 to 1950. These are now available on-line at the Guild of One-Name Studies 'Guild Archive' details can be found by 'clicking' Guild Archive ` Collection of later records is ongoing and are being regularly added to the Guild Archive. In 1538 Henry VIII ordered that each parish should keep Registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. The early registers were often on poor quality paper and were often damaged by water or decay. In 1598 it was ordered that the records should be on parchment, and previous entries where available were copied. You should be able to trace items from the mid—1500s. Listings have been made of the Parish registers of Western Kent and of Sussex. These are not complete, but are still comprehensive datasets. A similar listing for Surrey is in preparation. These listings are currently not available on-line, but may in the future be added to the Guild Archive. If you have a query please contact killick@one-name.org. A comprehensive list of the Parishes in Great Britain is in The Phillimore Atlas & Index of Parish Registers, edited by Cecil Humphery-Smith, published by Phillimore. If you do not own a copy many try your local Public Reference Libraries or LDS Family History Centre The national UK censuses of use to family historians generally began in 1841, and have taken place every 10 years thereafter (excepting 1941). The Killick Society records any Killicks found in the UK censuses and any other Censuses worldwide. A reconciliation has been made comparing the Killicks enumerated in the 1881 Census of Great Britain with those in Killick Society Family Trees. A full index of Killick's in the 1901 British Census has been made. The 1901 Census can be viewed on-line at the National Archives 1901 Census website. The indexes of Killicks are currently not available on-line, but may in the future be added to the Guild Archive. If you have a query please contact killick@one-name.org. Many people have left a Will and The Killick Society has records of many involving the family name from the indexes of Wills in the Public Record Office and at County archives. From 1858 details of all English & Welsh Wills and Administrations were lodged at the Principal Probate Registry in London. The Killick Society has extracted an index of all legible entries for the period 1858—1996. Members have obtained copies of the Wills of some of their ancestors. The contents of a number of these have been shared with the Killick Society. Therefore the Killick Society has additional information for of a number of Wills. The Society will be pleased to receive copies of any Wills or Administrations relating to the Killick name. A index of English & Welsh Killick Wills after 1858 is available on-line, in the Guild Archive. An index of pre 1858 Killick Wills in the Killick Society's records is at Pre 1858 Killick Wills. The data is held on a file that can be opened through Adobe Acrobat Reader (.pdf). If you do not have a copy download a free copy of Acrobat Reader 7.0.
